19世纪末、20世纪初的中国服饰一直被历史学家称为是极具西方代表的。在该书作者看来，猛烈的服饰时尚冲击成为了晚清时期中国人生活的重要组成部分。其时无论男女，都对流行时尚充满着强烈的好奇心。

在20世纪早期来到中国的旅行者眼中，传统中国服饰是单一和单调的。而此时时尚产业则刚刚兴起，尤其是在上海。当时的男子着蓝色长袍、戴皮帽、穿皮鞋；女士则穿紧身夹克和窄腿裤。家庭作坊式制衣方式让位于机织布料，进口布料也渐渐占据一席之地。这些改革标志着中国城市和乡村的大部分地区服饰文化变革的开端。而此变革在接下来的一段时间中持续了半个世纪之久。

作者向我们展示了辛亥革命时期的高领紧身袄、五四运动时期的学生装、文革时期的军便装和当今的全球化服饰。她从全球化的角度审视了中国服饰现代化进程中发生的变化，将中国人在不同时期对服饰的表达方式丰富和生动地展现在读者眼前。
