19世紀末、20世紀初的中國服飾一直被曆史學傢稱為是極具西方代錶的。在該書作者看來，猛烈的服飾時尚衝擊成為瞭晚清時期中國人生活的重要組成部分。其時無論男女，都對流行時尚充滿著強烈的好奇心。

在20世紀早期來到中國的旅行者眼中，傳統中國服飾是單一和單調的。而此時時尚産業則剛剛興起，尤其是在上海。當時的男子著藍色長袍、戴皮帽、穿皮鞋；女士則穿緊身夾剋和窄腿褲。傢庭作坊式製衣方式讓位於機織布料，進口布料也漸漸占據一席之地。這些改革標誌著中國城市和鄉村的大部分地區服飾文化變革的開端。而此變革在接下來的一段時間中持續瞭半個世紀之久。

作者嚮我們展示瞭辛亥革命時期的高領緊身襖、五四運動時期的學生裝、文革時期的軍便裝和當今的全球化服飾。她從全球化的角度審視瞭中國服飾現代化進程中發生的變化，將中國人在不同時期對服飾的錶達方式豐富和生動地展現在讀者眼前。

從晚明到改革開放後的服飾風尚變遷。流水賬一般，流於描述現象而無法深入分析，好些有意思的問題基本是推測而無法實證。材料依賴知識分子敘述和大眾媒體，基本看不齣來在跟哪些研究脈絡對話。
