标题用的“hidden”是双方面的——无论是缅甸国内还是国际，在很长一段时间里，都有意无意造成了对缅甸民主改革的理想化和过分强调+对其他社会问题（尤其是种族冲突和社会保障极度缺乏）的视而不见，过分着眼于“国”，却无法落实到“民生”。相对于他的The Making of Modern Burma来说这本也不算是“学术研究”，但作者还是希望通过自己对过去的剖析，提出关于“现在走的路是否是唯一可行的路”的疑问，并且去引导缅甸社会从一个更贴近民众也更广阔的视角去思考更实际的也更长远的挑战。另外作者的侧重点主要在军统年代到近年民主改革、经济改革，并没有深入谈及佛教和民族主义之间的联系。私认为缺失了这一点就不能完整理解缅甸的殖民“遗产”。
