標題用的“hidden”是雙方麵的——無論是緬甸國內還是國際，在很長一段時間裏，都有意無意造成瞭對緬甸民主改革的理想化和過分強調+對其他社會問題（尤其是種族衝突和社會保障極度缺乏）的視而不見，過分著眼於“國”，卻無法落實到“民生”。相對於他的The Making of Modern Burma來說這本也不算是“學術研究”，但作者還是希望通過自己對過去的剖析，提齣關於“現在走的路是否是唯一可行的路”的疑問，並且去引導緬甸社會從一個更貼近民眾也更廣闊的視角去思考更實際的也更長遠的挑戰。另外作者的側重點主要在軍統年代到近年民主改革、經濟改革，並沒有深入談及佛教和民族主義之間的聯係。私認為缺失瞭這一點就不能完整理解緬甸的殖民“遺産”。
