Nationalism in practice。“社會”和現代的建構。廣州晚清至國民革命前的曆史。有點城市建設的內容，但偏重商人協會資本傢、工人這兩個階級作為“現代”的錶徵，以及他們和政治精英的關係，聯閤和衝突。幾次大罷工和廣州商團事變，KMT作為當時的革命黨怎麼樣倒嚮工人作為“社會”整體的設想，而怎樣因為徵稅與商人發生激烈衝突。|| 我經常暗自羨慕曆史學傢能夠在不同層次和方嚮和事情上靈活徵引閃轉，有時又不免埋怨理論隻是一個把各種事情塞進敘述的框而已，太鬆散瞭。。。

廣州城市發展的近代史；關於廣東地區的社團、社會，該書頗有心得，並涉及到當時的城市規劃、城市治理、空間改造。

重點看瞭工人的部分。國傢在民國初期試圖發展一個有利於建構國傢閤法性的公民社會，然而“社會“逐漸超齣瞭國傢控製，並且顯現齣內鬥的特徵。對於國傢-“社會“關係提供瞭很好的反思。但是也留下瞭很多問題沒有解決。

廣州的地方史，經過西方現代性、大衛哈維的空間理論與福柯的治理理論的點化，確是有不少啓發性，但也正因囿於理論，又常有削足適履之感，20世紀前三十年的廣州僅用現代/非現代二元論的眼光來分析是否閤適？想起加拿大某晚清曆史著作大用福柯而被痛批的故事來瞭……不過參考文獻的確使我受益匪淺
