Fleeing the sterile perfection of
Greenwich, Connecticut, their stale
marriages and the guilt they harbor
over the deaths of their sons,
Margaret and Katharine have
trekked halfway around the world
to India. Their guardian angel on
this extraordinary voyage is the
Hindu god, Ganesha, who
assumes the shapes of fellow travel-
ers and Indians of every caste.
While Katharine yearns to connect
with even the lowliest untouchable,
Margaret s good breeding barely
hides her dismay and revulsion. As
they move through squares filled
with lepers and sail the Ganges
beside the burning ghats, they
come to terms with their painful
secrets and lingering grief.
