Elif Shafak is an award-winning British-Turkish novelist and the most widely read female author in Turkey. She writes in both Turkish and English, and has published seventeen books, eleven of which are novels. Her work has been translated into fifty languages. Shafak holds a PhD in political science and she has taught at various universities in Turkey, the US and the UK, including St Anne's College, Oxford University, where she is an honorary fellow. She is a member of World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council on Creative Economy and a founding member of the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR). An advocate for women's rights, LGBT rights and freedom of speech, Shafak is an inspiring public speaker and twice a TED global speaker, each time receiving a standing ovation. Shafak contributes to many major publications around the world and she has been awarded the title of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres. In 2017 she was chosen by Politico as one of the twelve people who would make the world better. She has judged numerous literary prizes and is chairing the Wellcome Prize 2019. 三星半。一个伊斯坦布尔妓女被杀后弥留之际10分38秒的人生味道，以及她的五个好朋友于深夜偷挖尸体投进大海的记叙。前半部分关于其家庭一夫二妻的叙述很是吸引人，后半部分有些散乱，人物名字很难记，阅读过程一直心存期待，但最后就那样戛然而止，不免失望。不过作者叙事功力还是不错。Glad I'm not going to translate it.

去年在土耳其旅行时开始了解这位土耳其当红女作家，并在伊斯坦布尔读完了她早期大作「伊斯坦布尔私生子」，开始成为其粉丝。这本是沙法克今年的新书，被布克奖shortlist，我从香港带到上海，断断续续的总算读完了。一开始是被书名吸引，但阅读过程其实是让人难过跟痛苦的。看似“悬疑”的书名背后，其实是沙法克用一如既往的写实风格，讲诉了伊斯坦布尔城市的无序和边缘人的挣扎。一名妓女被残忍奸杀，在断气前的10分38八秒闪回了短暂一生的种种。死后几个朋友一起努力把她的尸体从郊区坟地偷偷挖出来并丢进大海，以完成她的海葬心愿。文笔依然优美又沉稳老练，一众人物性格鲜活，伊斯坦布尔的暴力、冲突、无序以及高度的男权社会体制被写的很真实也很残酷。不得不说伊斯坦布尔真是个神秘、神奇、又充满故事的城市。
