罗杰•夏蒂埃1945年12月9日生于法国里昂，1967年获索邦大学硕士学位，1969年，他取得法国的大学历史学教师资格，1969-1970年，他任巴黎Lycee Louis-le-Gand的助理教授，同年为巴黎第一大学的现代史助理教授，后任法国社会科学高等研究院（EHESS）高级讲师，后担任该院所长。2006年始任法国学院教授，执掌“现代欧洲的书写文化”教职。

罗杰•夏蒂埃法国第四代年鉴学派、新文化史研究的代表人物，他的阅读史研究一般被视为新文化史和思想史的结合，扩大了书籍史的外延，在物质实践之处，他更关注一种文化实践的阅读，他认为正是阅读的发生，书籍的真正意义才会产生。他的关于书籍史的横跨社会史、文化史、思想史的研究方式使他成为当代最为重要的史学大师之一。其主要著作有：《法国编辑史》（主编）4卷（1989–1991）、《旧制度下法国的阅读和读者》（1987）、《法国大革命的文化根源》（2000）、《书籍的秩序》（1992）、《阅读的实践》（1993）、《革命书籍》（1997）、《西方世界的阅读史》（1997）、《悬崖边缘：历史、语言和实践》（1998）、《社会学家和历史学家》（2010）等。他1990年获美国印刷史学会年奖、1992年获法国科学院的历史学大奖，他还是英国科学院的通讯研究员。

注重文本的物质形态，帮助打开思路，有启发。和这学期旁听的那门words and objects也有很大关联。第二篇对福柯的《什么是作者》进行了补充和修正。读的过程中脑补了很多《古书通例》，就是不清楚现在做中国古代书籍史的都是什么样的写法。
