In 2008, the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies awarded Frank its highest honor.

这本书把传主的文学创作和思想放在了一个社会思潮的框架内，有大篇幅的关于社会背景的交代，并且偏向于思想方面。当然，也少不了对陀思妥耶夫斯基作品的称颂。作为传记，它最精彩的地方还是对传主的思想线索的追踪。关于它在西伯利亚的经历是最精彩的章节，写出了陀思妥耶夫斯基的惊心动魄的身份认同危机和转变的过程。陀思妥耶夫斯基的作品当然引人入胜，他的私人生活也非常有意思。他的写作和思考过程毫无疑问有人类最理性的参与，但是它写的却是非理性和无意识，和一些人性中理性无法控制的神秘因素。这种剧烈的宿命性的冲突处处体现在他的生活里，感谢上帝赐了他一个伟大的女性。有的时候，我想，写作这个行为本身，可能正是他的体内冲突的宣泄口吧。从这个意义上，它是个不受自己控制的天才。
