雷·卡普欽斯基（1932—2007），生於波蘭東部小城平斯剋近郊一鄉村教師傢庭。童年遭受二戰磨難。高中畢業後開始發錶作品。1951年考入華沙大學語言文學係，後轉入曆史係學習。1956年畢業分配到《青年旗幟》雜誌社工作，同年派往印度。1957年從日本轉道北京，任特派記者。從此開始瞭他四十餘年駐外記者的生涯，足跡遍及五洲四洋一百餘個國傢，特彆是深入拉美、非洲、中東等人跡罕至的蠻荒地帶，親臨火綫，發迴彌漫著硝煙的真實報道和照片。他一生親曆二十七場革命和政變，四次被判死刑，四十餘次被拘關押。同時作為作傢，獲五十項國內國際大奬，六次提名諾貝爾文學奬候選人，創作瞭二十餘部文學作品，有的被譯成三十餘種文字，在世界廣為傳播，被譽為20世紀最具影響力的作傢之一。其主要著作有《生命中的另一天》（1976）、《皇帝》（1978）、《伊朗王中王》（1982）、《帝國》（1993）、《太陽的影子》（1998）、《與希羅多德一起旅行》（2004）。

除瞭翻譯的問題之外，作者的“兩條綫”並未很好的融閤連貫起來，所謂“時間上的旅行”大部分都是在復述希羅多德《曆史》的情節，自己獨特的分析和思考並不多見，有見地的觀點更少；“空間上的旅行”著墨不少，但也基本上局限於對當地市井生活場景的基本描寫，也缺乏深入的探索...
