In this comparative-historical analysis of Spanish America, Mahoney offers a new theory of colonialism and postcolonial development. He explores why certain kinds of societies are subject to certain kinds of colonialism and why these forms of colonialism give rise to countries with differing levels of economic prosperity and social well-being. Mahoney contends that differences in the extent of colonialism are best explained by the potentially evolving fit between the institutions of the colonizing nation and those of the colonized society. 此書甚閤阿姨殖民學口味：殖民大法好，深度自由帝國貿易殖民比深度重商掠奪式殖民好，住不住人無所謂、製度搬來最重要XD以及此書同Carles Boix一樣有個特點，思路非常清晰、自我邏輯完整、論證非常密實、讀者和作者思維高度同步，往往讀到一處覺得“是不是還要考慮什麼”“是不是應該寫成什麼”，下一節、甚至下一段即馬上給齣（雖然有時較勉強的）補充解釋說明，非常耐讀。

這個就純粹是看口味瞭。重商主義殖民阻礙自由主義殖民，但沒有重商主義殖民，自由主義殖民也不來。自由主義殖民保障發展，但沒有自由主義殖民有戰爭也行。有戰爭保證發展，沒戰爭也保證發展。受現代政經訓練的肯定不會喜歡這種15個案例要添一堆均輪來處理outliers的書。

不但殖民可以是好的，自由主義的殖民是更好的。比較政治學者不考慮規範性問題，而是一味將責任推脫給政治理論學者，得齣的結論就是這麼充滿意識形態偏見。
