書本身極有野心，延續著一些重要文獻提齣的課題。寫繪畫的部分艱難而牽強，雕塑和建築反而有一定的創見。除瞭開頭那段梳理reform circle的關係，Nagel完全沒有justify他將這些案例整閤在一起的原因，這些案例的典型性和論述的適用範圍都值得質疑（比如saint jerome畫中的十字這個非常普遍的範式），而且如一篇書評所言，這本書在方法論上太專注於那些宗教改革者的mind，而忽略瞭這些案例的接受方，研究後者和前者的關係，不論是對應還是衝突，都能更深入探討所謂的controversy。這本書整體的argument仍然可以為後來的學者提供一些有趣的思路。
