Pankaj Mishra 的序言轻而易举地描绘出了小说中西方现代社会的官僚主义牢笼，所以唐帕纳尔才会被视为一位伤感的保守主义者，与无情的凯末尔主义者针锋相对。但Mishra却很少提及唐帕纳尔的小说跟精神生活、时间哲学、现代机械、物质文化之间微妙的互动。好歹唐帕纳尔熟读柏格森，再想想如今标准化时间在现代化的伊斯兰社会中所扮演的作用（封斋和礼拜），私人的时间和集约的时间之间如何妥协也可以是小说的重要主题。
