Pankaj Mishra 的序言輕而易舉地描繪齣瞭小說中西方現代社會的官僚主義牢籠，所以唐帕納爾纔會被視為一位傷感的保守主義者，與無情的凱末爾主義者針鋒相對。但Mishra卻很少提及唐帕納爾的小說跟精神生活、時間哲學、現代機械、物質文化之間微妙的互動。好歹唐帕納爾熟讀柏格森，再想想如今標準化時間在現代化的伊斯蘭社會中所扮演的作用（封齋和禮拜），私人的時間和集約的時間之間如何妥協也可以是小說的重要主題。

不愧是讓@manchild 坐過站的書，實在好看。某種意義上以現代性/bureaucracy 為主題的傅科擺變奏。Pure cynicism everywhere.
