埃裏剋·坦普爾·貝爾(Eric Temple Bell)1883年齣生於蘇格蘭的阿伯丁。早年就學於英格蘭。1902年到美國，進斯坦福大學學習，l904年取得文學士學位。1908年在華盛頓大學做研究生，兼事教學，1909年獲該校文學碩士學位。1911年進哥倫比亞大學，1912年獲該校哲學博士學位。此後迴華盛頓大學任數學講師，1921年成為教授。1924年夏～1928年夏任教於芝加哥大學，1926年上半年任教於哈佛大學，隨之受聘為加州理工學院的數學教授。

貝爾是美國國傢科學院院士，曾任美國數學協會主席，美國數學學會和美國科學促進會副主席，《美國數學學會會報》、《美國數學學報》和《科學哲學》編委。他曾獲美國數學學會的博歇(Bocher)奬。其著作除本書外，還包括《紫色的藍寶石》(1924)、《代數的算術》(1927)、《揭穿科學之謎》和((科學的皇後》(1931)、《命理學》(1933)以及《探索真理》(1934)等。

貝爾在其最後一部著作《最後的問題》齣版之前，於1960年12月逝世。

說實話，對這本眾口稱贊的書有點失望，不對我的胃口。主要不喜歡Bell略顯誇誇其談自以為是的敘述語氣（比如他認為學語言比研究數學低等），仿佛他的評述就是對數學傢的蓋棺定論一樣。本想給3星，考慮翻譯水平的低劣，隻給2星。

總有一種錯覺，能夠學好它,事實上，學得最爛的就是它瞭。年少時，無比排斥；年長瞭，倒興趣日增，閑得慌。如果，那麼。。。

沒有讀過原版，但是從翻譯後的字裏行間盡量的去揣測作者的原意，記錄大師事跡的書該是不錯，但含蓄的講，本書的翻譯是不負責任的。當然還是感謝譯者去翻譯這本書，同時也感覺到瞭翻譯的一些睏難，可以從生硬的翻譯看齣作者在寫書時該是用到瞭很多生僻的或者是相當口語化的文字...
