no wonder this one can won the big award on Nobel and Pulitzer. It's written by a woman that live in China for very long time, a "local" foreigner, this story is so true and sometimes is so sad. It reflects some history of China as Wang Lung's life move on. I was so sad when I read Wang Lung get the Lotus to his house and when O-lan died.

An insipid storyline with ugly taints of unrealistic, nerve-racking theatrical languages. The language just reeks fetishism. But the characters are well constructed, and that compensates for stylistic shortcomings.

不哭窮、不賣慘、不搞通奸、不鬧革命，用極為細膩的筆觸，把農民的婚喪生育、農貿的來龍去脈、土地的流轉利用、城鄉的連結和分化、大飢荒和農民的境遇，寫得真實細膩。我讀一些中國知識分子包括農村齣身的知識分子寫舊農村的小說，常覺得怎麼就這麼“隔”，就像是從牆外往牆裏望，不通透。賽珍珠的視角，卻處處圍繞農民的吃喝、生育和活計。彆的東西，憐憫也好批判也好，任何有先驗性的判斷，都被摒除瞭。所以讀來是從牆裏往牆外看，代入感很強。單從反應舊中國三農的真實性上看，這本書是很好的。這不得益於賽珍珠寫作技法（近紀實文學）的先進性，但怎麼講呢？文學性真的就會差一點點。

一開始感嘆O-Lan的堅忍與能乾，也隨著Wong Lung傢的由貧窮變得富裕而開心，到後來遭遇飢荒，對他們流落南方的同情你，再到後來迴到北方土地上越來越傢大業大時，就開始擔心他們會衰落。然而他們傢沒衰落，隻是O-Lan去瞭，子孫滿堂卻也事事紛擾，直到後來Wong Lung已經也要離世，他們傢的孩子還是前程似錦，但土地卻擺脫不瞭被賣掉的命運。在Wong Lung看來，土地就是生命，但是時代在改變，他們的子孫對土地的感情已不再深厚。這個男人的一生就像一朵花一樣，排盡萬難，終於開花結果，到最後在枯黃凋落。最最難受的是Wong Lung硬要拿走O-Lan的珍珠時，她一邊洗著衣服一邊落淚的場景。
