For some reason, I really didn't enjoy reading the book. (Grammar may contribut a little also, although I know it is the Toni's intention.) He did reveal the dark side, and disturb one successfully, but I just don't like it that much.

Internalized self-loathing occurs to everyone regardless of race, gender, and sexual orientation. Toni Morrison chooses to show "how" rather than answer "why", thus suspending the judgement. The narrative reminds me of As I Lay Dying from time to time, though it is not as neat. ("Double consciousness" might also prove useful in interpreting it.)

Pecola did not deny the standard of beauty----the whiteness aesthetics.So only in madness, could she have the bluest eyes. What a tragedy.
