斯蒂芬•杰伊•古尔德（1941—2002），犹太裔美国人，出生于纽约。他是世界著名的进化论科学家、古生物学家、科学史学家和科学散文作家，美国国家科学院成员。他在哈佛大学教授生物学、地质学、科学史等课程超过三十年，是哈佛大学比较动物学博物馆馆长，曾担任美国科学促进会会长。他是美国麦克阿瑟奖（创立于1981年，俗称“天才奖”）的首批获奖者之一。他自1974年起在美国《自然史》杂志开辟专栏定期撰文，这些专栏文章后来以“自然史沉思录”为总标题集结为7本书出版。他一生出版了二十余部著作，其中不乏畅销之作，并多次获得美国国家图书奖、美国全国书评人协会奖、美国大学优等生荣誉学会图书奖等。
