斯蒂芬•傑伊•古爾德（1941—2002），猶太裔美國人，齣生於紐約。他是世界著名的進化論科學傢、古生物學傢、科學史學傢和科學散文作傢，美國國傢科學院成員。他在哈佛大學教授生物學、地質學、科學史等課程超過三十年，是哈佛大學比較動物學博物館館長，曾擔任美國科學促進會會長。他是美國麥剋阿瑟奬（創立於1981年，俗稱“天纔奬”）的首批獲奬者之一。他自1974年起在美國《自然史》雜誌開闢專欄定期撰文，這些專欄文章後來以“自然史沉思錄”為總標題集結為7本書齣版。他一生齣版瞭二十餘部著作，其中不乏暢銷之作，並多次獲得美國國傢圖書奬、美國全國書評人協會奬、美國大學優等生榮譽學會圖書奬等。
