如果說文學作品有兩極，我們可以稱之為藝術極和審美極：藝術極指作者創造的本文（文本），審美極指讀者完成的實現。作品多於本文，因為本文僅當其被實現時纔獲得生命，接受瞭接受美學的讀者反應批評在這點上是可以和伽達默爾的闡釋學對接的。勞倫斯·斯特恩對於文學作品的看法是，作品象一個競技場，讀者和作者在這裏參見一個想象力的遊戲。對讀者的過度強調會導緻後現代如費捨的無界限傾嚮以及為解構主義如耶魯四人幫提供方法論指導。不過伊瑟爾或者每一位後現代的非盲目者對此都有所自覺或意圖，所以伊瑟爾說隻有把他自己的熟悉的經驗世界留在身後，讀者纔能真正參與文學本文提供給他的冒險活動。這意味著此處的文學和作者本身首要是指那些足以提供常讀常新意義上的陌生性的經典，這可以參考哈羅德·布魯姆的《西方正典》之序言。星是固定的而連綫可變
