Lois Lowry is known for her versatility and invention as a writer. She was born in Hawaii and grew up in New York, Pennsylvania, and Japan. After several years at Brown University, she turned to her family and to writing. She is the author of more than thirty books for young adults, including the popular Anastasia Krupnik series. She has received countless honors, among them the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award, the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Award, the California Young Reader.s Medal, and the Mark Twain Award. She received Newbery Medals for two of her novels, NUMBER THE STARS and THE GIVER. Her first novel, A SUMMER TO DIE, was awarded the International Reading Association.s Children.s Book Award. Lowry now divides her time between Cambridge and an 1840s farmhouse in Maine.

不算一口气看完，但是是第一本英语小说那么有兴趣地读完。结局开放式，但是有点想哭，现实好残忍……

看的是Houghton Mifflin Harcourt 出版的。小说本身感觉跟饥饿游戏或divergent有点像（只看过电影），只不过后者多强调专制而前者在说乌托邦环境下强调“the sameness”而失去生活的多彩等等……

社区中的人们没有感情，生活连黑白都不是，是灰色的，所有的东西似乎都可以用一抹影子来替代。因为畏惧悲伤，孤独，所以连快乐幸福的权利也放弃。抽离了人性，我们与机器没有什么两样。但是正是这样可以维持一个有秩序的社会。其实根本就没有什么elsewhere，小说中整个人类世界都是模糊的。在我看来，最后Jonas和Gabriel应该是去了天堂，而最后看见五光十色的世界就像卖火柴的小女孩最后看到的祖母和圣诞大餐一样。感觉the giver到后半部分的定位有点乱，或者是我读得太糊涂。不管怎样，这是别人家的儿童读物。看完书之后看到自己的影子突然感觉有点奇怪，脑子里全是天呐我是人类头发还这么长这是一副怎样的躯壳我是怎样的存在啊啊啊好神奇然后天呐你在想什么。这大概就是阅读的后劲儿吧。
