Cheever 有種瞬間睏住讀者的敘事能力，他的故事中人物都像睏獸，有他總結的那種“intentionally naive",卻很難讓人喜愛或者去模仿，畢竟水溶在水裏，並不會立即兌換成閱讀的快感……

契佛的短篇比長篇好太多。斷斷續續從一月份讀到現在，六百多頁終於讀完，自我感覺如同完成一項壯舉。契佛的故事，也不太有故事性，在我看來他書寫的是郊區中産的失意憂傷的情緒狀態。我驚訝於他是如何做到精準捕捉隱匿於外在的故事裏的情緒的。我一邊讀他筆下的生活，一邊過活我自己的生活，如同與人飲酒，相談甚歡。愛契佛遠勝於卡佛，不解卡佛巨大的聲望來自哪裏，對卡佛非常無感。
