这部诞生于水门事件时期的作品洞见了美国总统“帝王化”的趋势，但在结尾处大体仍对a strong President under the Constitution的前景保持乐观。可是其后四十余年所见证的，却是总统制中imperial的一面愈来愈被正当化（如unitary executive理论）。有趣的是，Schlesinger在书中提到美国总统制有一个五十年的腐化周期，如果从1973年的尼克松算起，那么高概率在2023仍居其位的Trump则真真是印证了施氏的预言。
