這本書更大意義在於統稱齣Historical Institutionalism這個名詞，在此之前隻是bringing the state back in，在此之後就是歷史製度論瞭。裏麵有幾本作為示範的論文也不錯，當中以比較福利國傢那章較為深刻。

後來的社會學傢就再不像他們的前輩那樣熱衷於用一個變量來漂亮地解釋社會變遷的機製瞭，他們認為無論是馬剋思的階級，還是理性選擇理論的利益最大化，都要放在一時一地的情境之下纔不會淪為空洞的概念。於是轉而去勾連這些概念和社會曆史背景之間的淵源。至於做得怎麼樣，就不好說瞭。
