這是一本特彆好的書，主要從兩方麵闡述瞭疾病與衰老。一方麵是社會外部對待老人病人的態度與方式。從poorhouse進化到nursing home到assisted living，從在傢養老變成機構養老。另一方麵是老人病人以及他們的傢人麵的死亡的主觀態度，究竟是要進全力延長生病還是在有限的時間內提高生命質量。非常值得人思考，奇葩說最近討論過相關辯題，正反方的大部分觀點這本書中其實都有涉及。作者作為一個印度裔的美國醫生，瞭解不同文化的養老傳統，自己同樣為醫生的父親也經曆瞭癌癥病人所需要做的一係列艱難抉擇，有這樣的背景所以作者能如此完整的呈現這個主題

如何理解思考，如何麵對死亡在現代醫學科技越來越發達的今天是個值得探討的問題。這種類型的書大部分是在解釋現象，提齣解決辦法的部分卻太少瞭。
