Kent Haruf is the author of six novels (and, with the photographer Peter Brown, West of Last Chance). His honours include a Whiting Foundation Writers' Award, the Mountains & Plains Booksellers Award, the Wallace Stegner Award, and a special citation from the PEN/Hemingway Foundation; he was also a finalist for the National Book Award, the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and The New Yorker Book Award. Benediction was shortlisted for the Folio Prize. He died in November 2014, at the age of seventy-one.

灵魂是一种怎样的状态呢？或许应该是轻盈、坦诚的。两位老人在夜晚交谈，将过去的一切，连同那些曾经碾过心灵的痛楚也和盘托出，不加修饰。故事就是这样开始的——令人稍稍有些许庆幸的是，故事也是这样结束的。Kent Haruf的语言非常平实隽永，用词很简单（华盛顿邮报的书评里有提到本书里and的运用，认为这是an assumption that we‘re already involved in the lives of these people）。联想到这是他的遗作，总有天鹅咏叹之感：“我想说的，就是这些了。” （另，也让我想到卡波特的草竖琴和麦克林恩的大河恋，如果能写出书评的话想多说说……这是在国庆拥挤的车站给我带来无限慰藉的一本书。）

很早以前看过电影。书比电影好太多了，温柔冷静的笔风很喜欢！一开始Eddie来敲门的那一段对话就会把人深深吸引。结局真是有点难过...经历过漫长的一生再经历结局的离别会是咋样的体验呢

简单的语言却有种能触动灵魂的力量，贯穿全文的那种bittersweet的感觉读起来很舒服。未能给五星的原因主要是结局的那种生活的无奈实在是太过苦涩。但是假如想要读一些能让人沉下心来的作品的话，推荐这本。

艾迪的儿子真是讨人厌啊，艾迪这个人物也不讨喜，她缺乏勇气捍卫爱情。这个故事没什么特别的，比较温吞，也可能是我还没达到可以去欣赏这个故事的年纪
