Creating the Intellectual redefines how we understand relations between intellectuals and the Chinese socialist revolution of the last century. Under the Chinese Communist Party, “the intellectual” was first and foremost a widening classification of individuals based on Marxist thought. Drawing on a wide range of data, Eddy U takes the reader on a journey that examines political discourses, revolutionary strategies, rural activities, urban registrations, workplace arrangements, organized protests, and theater productions. He lays out in colorful detail the formation of new identities, forms of organization, and associations in Chinese society. 一边说“知识分子”是一种社会分类，一边强调分类的边界是模糊而变动的，结果就是作者自己的观点本身左右互搏，最大的结论也很无力。唯一比较新的观点是党委负责制、思想教育、群众监督三种体制都是为了应对知识分子问题而生的。

这本书最大的贡献大概就是为ccp如何分类人群提供了理论框架和富有创造性的terms吧。虽然讲的是知识分子，但是classification的人群可以继续扩大(少数民族，农民，华侨等等)。另，感觉作者有为了argument完整性而强行找与自己论点相符的材料之嫌。49年之后上海给知识分子登记找工作那章还挺有趣的。

挺失望的，原本以为会收获一些理论insights，结果新瓶旧酒都称不上——他对社会分类理论的认识和讨论都太基础了（看reference就知道）。而且整个书就是个论文集，很多章节虽然能看出来他重写了一些地方，试图reframe成和分类的文献相关的讨论，但实际上材料根本没在讨论知识分子as a classification, but still a group of people……具体的被分类雨分类的互动，分类的arbitrary啥的根本没咋涉及。
