Cather's rich and vivid depictions of the beautiful countryside broadened my horizon to a realm not unfamiliar but somehow dismissed previously. I keep thinking about my mom while reading the book. The hardship of her childhood still has visible traces on her face, but I bet she wouldn't want to have lived otherwise.
