In the process he reveals that electoral systems are neither as diverse nor as complex as is often assumed.

Lijphart的这部著作大概是选举制度研究的经典之作了。其中SNTV制度大概是日本政治研究的学生特别值得一读的部分。所谓中选区制的功罪，随着时代的不一样，着眼点也并不相同。就现在政治学的学生所强调的：自民党党组织的特性和利益诱导型政治的弊病，当然是事实。然而，就理论而言，稍微有一些其他值得注意的微妙的地方。SNTV是准比例代表制，立候补的当落线也较低，是立候补中心的选举方式，这都是事实，但是不是事实的是，SNTV就游戏规则而言并不是比例制（仅就所产生的可能的结果是），SNTV是否诱导了M+1的选民的投票方式，在经验观察与理论推导上并没有完全稳健的结果。SNTV并没有在选票和议席上强烈的制造多数的效应，一票格差有。但是，SNTV制下各选区并非均质，这也是未来值得讨论的问题吧。
