伯克的主要创见在将崇高跟恐怖连接在一起，然后提出美与道德无关，以及安全范围内的恐怖才会产生崇高。然而伯克的论证过于简朴，材料也主要来自基本的古典学书籍和英国文学。对概念的界定也很成问题，所幸他的谨慎让他处处都为自己留了后路。可能伯克自己也没想到自己的理论给性虐文化提了理论根基吧
