The story is told by Holden Caulfield, a seventeen- year-old dropout who has just been kicked out of his fourth school. Throughout, Holden dissects the 'phony' aspects of society, and the 'phonies' themselves: the headmaster whose affability depends on the wealth of the parents, his roommate who scores with girls using sickly-sweet affection. Lazy in style, full of slang and swear words, it's a novel whose interest and appeal comes from its observations rather than its plot intrigues (in conventional terms, there is hardly any plot at all). Salinger's style creates an effect of conversation, it is as though Holden is speaking to you personally, as though you too have seen through the pretences of the American Dream and are growing up unable to see the point of living in, or contributing to, the society around you. Written with the clarity of a boy leaving childhood, it deals with society, love, loss, and expectations without ever falling into the clutch of a cliche.

自己在那个年纪，应该比书中写的更糟糕。丧，迷失，叛逆，想逃离。甚至不明白继续生活下去的意义。最后一节Phoebe真的很治愈，自己带着行李要跟哥哥逃离，单是这个幼稚的举动就很感动。有个妹妹或姐姐真的会幸福很多！

词汇量特别少的读物，估计初高中生都可以读懂，研一才读，汗颜啊。意识流，开始略不适应，感觉不可靠叙事，主观色彩太强，东拉西扯，愤世嫉俗，用old Phoebe的话来说，you never liked anything。但特别真实，那个年龄段的孩子不就是这个心态吗？想了解一切，想装成熟，感觉没有人真正了解自己，不喜欢学习，骨子里的叛逆蠢蠢欲动，加上主人公敏感的内心，一直莫名其妙就会sad and depressed，唯一一次开心是在倒数第二章末尾突如其来的暴雨中，看到妹妹在旋转木马上的样子，情难自禁地想大哭，内心却十分快乐。略搞笑的是他招妓却想谈心，最后还被多讹了5刀。最惊悚的是以为老师是良师，晚上在他睡觉的时候却拿手摸他的头。这本书属于开始不喜欢看，但越看越喜欢，跟boyhood有异曲同工之妙

塞林格的语言太有意思了，人物塑造很有个性，叛逆不失幽默感。相比十几年前读的译本，原著可读性高多了。能读原著就不要读译本，体会不到真髓。
