The real Ivan lived alone in a tiny cage for twenty-seven years at a shopping mall before being moved to Zoo Atlanta after a public outcry. He was a beloved celebrity at the zoo, which houses the nation's largest collection of western lowland gorillas. Ivan was well known for his paintings, which he "signed" with a thumbprint.

Katherine lives in California with her husband and two children.

纽伯瑞奖的确是相当程度上的质量保证。对小象完全无感，印象最深的倒是耐心和善地养大主角、主动塞钱给穷困员工、尽量避免苛待动物、结果却被主角跟员工一起背叛的可怜老板Mack，以及结尾那句”This is, after all, still a cage“。大象对动物园的定义很棒——”A good zoo is how humans make amends“，这并不是大团圆，只是现状下所能达到的相对理想收场而已。

儿童节读物，纽伯瑞的书内核都很一致，表面上是孩子与动物清澈柔软的善良和永恒的希望，底色都是成人世界里无尽的苦难，二者既对立又彼此营养，所以总是催泪又治愈。唯一的bug大概就是Mack有点过于惨了，但是买卖也是罪恶的源头吧...今天看一席里说买一只隼就有十只因此死掉，Ruby和Ivan的siblings也都是在这个过程中死的。

其实是听完的，朗读的不错，尤其是那只狗????，又贱又萌。流落在城市的动物，最后的希望也只能寄托于人类，还好人们在一步一步的了解动物，关心动物。Ivan有了自己要保护的小象Ruby，这个时候他才是最强大的吧。U R always the one and only
