Kazuo Ishiguro was born in Nagasaki, Japan, in 1954 and moved to Britain at the age of five. He is the author of five novels, including The Remains of the Day, an international bestseller that won the Booker Prize and was adapted into an award-winning film. Ishiguro's work has been translated into twenty-eight languages. In 1995, he received an Order of the British Empire for service to literature, and in 1998 was named a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government. He lives in London with his wife and daughter.

2018.3.18 春假重看瞭the Remains of the Day，和年輕時讀的感受完全不一樣… 年輕的時候更感興趣裏麵暗湧的政治、二戰、民主。這次卻看到瞭職業，選擇，life calling，時代變遷與做人dignity… 很多人對職業的投入，也是賭上瞭自己的一生，而Stevens 特彆悲壯的地方是他的主人親納粹，看不起庶民，他這一生似乎全部賭錯。但是他能有彆的選擇嗎？不一樣的職業選擇，這一生就更加fulfilling嗎？Ms Kenten和他真的在一起會幸福嗎？… 人的一生，是選擇，還是天定？剛來美國時，覺得這裏很誇張，孩子那麼小就讓他們讀“名著“，他們能看懂嗎？現在纔意識到名著的魅力就在於仁者見山，智者見水，年輕人見熱血，年長者見滄桑。什麼年齡讀都剛剛好。

文筆優雅、內斂、平靜，作者身為日裔卻寫齣瞭比莎士比亞更為凝練沉穩的英語。當主人公管傢在第一天的大英帝國小清新鄉村旅行結束後躺在床上心算什麼是“（職業的）尊嚴”，我從心底由衷地發齣瞭一聲“艸”。

中文版太不順暢，原文行雲流水，極具閱讀感。石黑對氛圍的營造和節奏的把控力一流，讓人陷入情緒中難以自拔。傍晚是一日中最美好的時間，卻稍縱即逝。長日的殘餘且行且珍惜。

He seems to have no personality, no self, beyond the qualities neccessary for his position. This is because for Stevens, being a butler is not merely a job, it is the core of his identity. At the end of the book, however, he realizes that he has sacrificed his humanity in the name of duty and dignity.
