William Somerset Maugham was born in Paris in 1874. He spoke French even before he spoke a word of English, a fact to which some critics attribute the purity of his style.

His parents died early and, after an unhappy boyhood, which he recorded poignantly in 'Of Human Bondage' , Maugham became a qualified physician. But writing was his true vocation. For ten years before his first success, he almost literally starved while pouring out novels and plays.

During World War I, Maugham worked for the British Secret Service . He travelled all over the world, and made many visits to America. After World War II, Maugham made his home in south of France and continued to move between England and Nice till his death in 1965.

毛姆笔下的Strickland，即便在绘画方面有天赋有才华、以及他看不到六便士只看到月亮的独特魅力，也cover不了因其丧失基本人性和其本质自私而让我对他产生的极度厌恶感。整本书都能感受到毛姆对女性深入骨髓的轻视。

和想象的不一样。艺术作品描绘不如艾特伍德的猫眼，抛弃一切的天才形象不如安兰德的源泉，人物调侃不如萨奇的短篇。我们看不到男主角的想法，只是在无数的supporting characters 里打着转。嘲讽庸俗的人，嘲讽女性，嘲讽爱情，手法不算一针见血，但实在伤人。抛家弃子最大的问题便是妻儿的生计，可毛姆将这些人划分为庸俗，为有激情有梦想的男主角的累赘。这里的女性,只有狗，庸人，和无意义地赴死的人。我不喜欢这本书，我无法喜欢。
