奧威爾原名埃裏剋阿瑟布萊爾(Eric Arthur Blair)，1903年生於印度。

1907年他舉傢遷迴到英格蘭。1917年，他進入伊頓公學。1921年後來到緬甸加入Indianimperial Police，1928年辭職。隨後的日子裏他貧病交加，此間他當過教師、書店店員，直到1940年，他成為New English Weekly 的小說評論員，他纔有瞭穩定的收入養傢糊口。1936年間，他訪問瞭蘭開夏郡和約剋郡，1936年底，他來到西班牙參加西班牙內戰，其間他受傷。二戰期間(1940-1943)，他為BBS Eastern Service工作，並在此間寫瞭大量政治和文學評論。1945年起他成為Observer的戰地記者和Machester Evening News的固定撰稿人。

1945年，他齣版瞭《動物農場》，1949年齣版瞭《1984》。奧威爾患有肺結核，於1950年死去。
