钱乘旦，历史学博士，荣誉文学博士（英国），现任北京大学历史系教授，中国英国史研究会会长。主要研究方向为欧洲史、世界现代化比较研究、西方文化史。主要著作包括：《走向现代国家之路》、《第一个工业化社会》、《在传统与变革之间——英国文化模式溯源》、《世界现代化进程》、《寰球透视：现代化的迷途》等，译著有《帝国斜阳》、《英国工人阶级的形成》。担任中央电视台12集电视纪录片《大国崛起》的学术指导。作品多次获奖，包括国家教委人文社会科学研究成果一等奖、江苏省哲学社会科学优秀成果一等奖、吴玉章奖等。曾主持多项重大科研项目，包括“英国与英联邦国家发展研究”、“英国与发达国家现代化研究”、“世界现代化进程不同模式研究”等。
