主人翁老实人年轻时全盘接受一个乐观主义者的哲学观念--任何事情的发生都有其缘由，而最终结果都将是圆满的。结果老实人以及他的小伙伴的经历了一系列夸张到难以想象的磨难：抢劫、强奸、火刑、绞刑...但最终大家都平安度过劫难，在田园生活中安享人生。乐观主义者最后再次重申哲学观点，但老实人态度已由坚信转向怀疑：我们还是要需要劳作于田地。即使上天自有安排，命数已定，消极怠工还是行不通的。
