這本三十年代的著作可謂國際關係顯示主義濫觴之作，矛頭直指威爾遜十四條帶來的盲目樂觀的世界，二十年危機後果然二戰爆發，現實主義一躍成為主流。有時候也在想，人類真的是為自私而活？。。淚奔。。譯者秦亞青教授是我的偶像，嚮他緻敬。

神作，我要讀哭瞭。

對我來說卡爾最動人之處不在於理論的嚴整和案例的選取；事實上我認為他的東西無法以後來興起的國際關係科學/實證主義去評判。我以為卡爾最引人入勝的地方在於他心中一直有大量的tension：權力和經濟利益追求與道德和良心追求作為兩大推動曆史進步的力量卻一再相互衝突以至於無法調和，曆史錯誤的一再重復，歐陸經典政治和社會理論麵對殘酷大戰現實的無力，人類未來命運的不確定，等等。在書中他花瞭大量篇幅試圖去解釋和解決這些tension，指齣直麵現實的可貴，在智識上力圖保留歐陸基礎而又發展齣可以解釋國際關係現實的方嚮。本質上在麵對現實權力衝突的時候頗有掙紮，卻又直白而深刻地指齣其不可逃避之處，在這點上他與摩根索是相通的。另外，卡爾另有一本書是專門記敘這二十年的國際關係，是純曆史紀錄型的著作。
