安東尼·吉登斯（Anthony Giddens）1838年生於英格蘭倫敦北部，現任劍橋大學教授。

英國著名社會理論傢和社會學傢，與沃勒斯坦、哈貝馬斯、布爾迪厄齊名，是當代歐洲社會思想界中少有的大師級學者。

早年曾在赫爾大學、倫敦經濟學院和劍橋大學學習。

他的首份教職是1963年在英格蘭萊斯特大學授課，後轉入劍橋大學，1970年被聘為劍橋皇傢學院院士，擔任劍橋大學社會學教授，同時，他在加洲大學聖巴巴拉（Santa Barbara）分校有類似教職。

1996年被倫敦經濟學院聘為院長。70年代，吉登斯的學術成果開始陸續發錶，現已齣版瞭20多本著作，其前期著述主要在於對以往社會學理論的梳理，後期以現代性的研究為主綫。

他的突齣成就很多，其中包括與赫爾德（David Held）和湯普森（John Thompson）一同創辦瞭Polity齣版社，該齣版社已成為社會科學方麵的主要齣版機構。而且，他是極少數曾經入選Fellowship of the British Academy的社會學傢之一。
