其实这一本跟其他的新文化史写法是很不一样的，这里比较偏向阐释学和图像学的方法。

理论建构＞案例的典型性

为清代礼学包裹上了人类学的话语，许多常见的讨论，都变得特别奇怪了。我认为清代礼学不太适合这么做，人类学分析适合于早期历史。但问题思路还是能备作参考的。

我们号称是在一个强调统一的文化当中，但却往往喜欢拿跃出来的一瞬来美剌鱼；如果把它放回水中来看，又该如何？

研究作为“文本/表演”的仪式，18世纪的确是较为特殊的对象。而从内容上看，作者的理论建构与事实论述间有着比较明显的空隙，乃至偏移。总的来说，这是一部适合西方读者的作品；对于中国的读者，尤其是研究者而言，也只能做到有限的启发而已。作者的知识似乎过于聚焦于纸面上的清帝国，对整体的帝国历史缺乏深入认识。
