研究作為“文本/錶演”的儀式，18世紀的確是較為特殊的對象。而從內容上看，作者的理論建構與事實論述間有著比較明顯的空隙，乃至偏移。總的來說，這是一部適閤西方讀者的作品；對於中國的讀者，尤其是研究者而言，也隻能做到有限的啓發而已。作者的知識似乎過於聚焦於紙麵上的清帝國，對整體的帝國曆史缺乏深入認識。

內容豐富，單單30頁的參考書目就特值一觀

嘗試以人類學的角度來闡釋禮，想法倒不錯。倆問題值得討論：禮知識的發現是隨時間而變的；禮製有時是有需要再製定，不是一開始就有框架。新清史對本書的引述誤解很多，不可盡信。

關於古代中國，禮是非常值得研究的一個話題。作者搜集瞭許多文獻，可能由於資料整閤，以及作者想處理的問題太多，使文章顯得有些碎片化，有些淩亂，但用心慢慢看還是有思路預設其中的。
