虽然已经过去二十多年，但仍不失为英语学习者最好的工具书。相比之下，第六版第七版限词，于是解释篇幅变长；同时删掉了诸多习语；而且，这两版和柯林斯很多解释居然一字不差。但相对来说，第四版有些解释已经过时，新词或旧词新义没有收录。
