The final destination of the Long March and center of the Chinese Communist Party's red bases, Yan'an acquired mythical status during the Maoist era. Though the city's significance as an emblem of revolutionary heroism has faded, today's Chinese still glorify Yan'an as a sanctuary for ancient cultural traditions.

Ka-ming Wu's ethnographic account of contemporary Yan'an documents how people have reworked the revival of three rural practices--paper-cutting, folk storytelling, and spirit cults--within (and beyond) the socialist legacy. 前半段是民俗与旅游，后半段是宗教与仪式，有些断裂，而且后半本几乎跟延安没啥关系，任何华北农村都可以套。感觉作者实在揉不到一块去了，于是造了个hyper-folk统统仍了进去，结论也只好笼统地大而化之。看港中本出版社的网站，此书中文本（非中译本）7月份中，不知有何修订。可以配合《记忆的政治》、洪长泰等读前半本，配合任何中国民间宗教的民族志读后半本。竟然读了本2015年出版的英文民族志……封闭在内陆一隅太久，突然有种走在前沿的错觉。

对延安地区剪纸、说书与灵媒信仰等民俗文化实践为研究对象，提出传统民俗在现代社会转型中被官方宣传、知识分子干涉、媒介化的旅游表演所挪用与改造，构成“hyper-folk”（某种意义上就是fakelore）的过程，在都市化过程中形成了一种新的乡土性与替代性的乡土主体性。大致上回应的还是洪长泰与卢飞丽这批人提出的传统民俗文化在社会变革中的再生。
