He has written for numerous publications, includingThe New York Times Magazine, Mother Jones, and The Washington Post. Born in Chicago, he received his B.A. and M.A. degrees in Philosophy from the University of California Berkeley. He lives in Silver Spring, MD.

论大洪水形成的滥觞

在Trump当选后再来评论这本书心情复杂。本书比较客观地解释了在什么样的社会环境下容易产生populism，并以Trump和Sanders在本次大选中的表现作为例证进行了解释。纯看热闹心态，it is a shame that Sanders didn't defeat Clinton。书中比较让人困惑的一点是neoloberalism和establishment在某些context下似乎是interchangeable的，而neoliberalism有似乎有着非常广泛的定义，几乎可以认为就是populism的反面。这一场elite与people之间的战争将会漫长且painful，未来几十年估计会很好看。

看完还是对民粹主义有了不同的认识。追溯美国19世纪末产生民粹主义那段是新知。对FN的描述也开拓了视野，毕竟国内媒体只会说他们是纳粹。民粹主义是对抗建制派而产生。右翼民粹主义反对移民，左翼不反对。自由主义确实是鼓吹人的自由流动从而产生经济社会效益的最大化，然而本土人工高、移民工资低，损害了本地人的利益。但是民粹主义所谓把工作留给本地人的做法，很多时只是口号，特朗普也没能创造更多的就业。更何况AI时代即将到来。作者预测错了一件事，特朗普确实赢了。

……回顾了20世纪以来欧美的民粹主义政治家与政党、这些政党兴起的社会背景和选民基础、这些政党的兴衰历史。反正对西方政治制度我不了解……我就是练个英语加看个热闹。
