文中通过川普当选展开讨论，西方民主自由是否走入民粹，今后的自由之路要怎么走。由于是结合时事，所以理解作者讲的事情并不难。西方的精英们(white elite)，也就是trump的攻击对象，对普遍民主自由的发展多少带着悲观，觉得民粹，排外，会把社会带入黑暗时代。我不知道这一天多久会到来，但是作者的一些观点我还是赞同的。他觉得当今社会大多数人觉得自己没有被尊重，穷人活在狗咬狗的恶性竞争中，大家对未来都充满悲观。原以为这是hard模式下我们的感受，作者的描述让我感觉到这其实是一个普遍的问题。作者并没有给出一个方法，但是提出了很好的问题，就如同书名一样。很喜欢书中的一句话 the search for Eden always ends in tears 看来作者还是悲观的
