In this groundbreaking volume, Jan-Werner Müller argues that at populism's core is a rejection of pluralism. Populists will always claim that they and they alone represent the people and their true interests. Müller also shows that, contrary to conventional wisdom, populists can govern on the basis of their claim to exclusive moral representation of the people: if populists have enough power, they will end up creating an authoritarian state that excludes all those not considered part of the proper "people." Muller给出的是一个比较严格极端的定义:populism是指一种观念:“我能代表全部人民”并且“只有我能代表全部人民”并且不能质疑我代表了全部人民，否则你就是人民的敌人。读这本书的每一个论证都让我想起ccp。。。所以问题来了:muller的populism跟authoritarianism甚至totalitirianism有什么本质区别？还是只是暂时没有彻底把民主体制的脸面彻底撕破的后两者？

若想借此书来了解西方近年来民粹主义政治崛起的根源，那么此书并未提供答案，因为作者没有涉及到政治经济学分析。仅从政治哲学的进路来界定民粹主义，不免有点隔靴搔痒。

作为对民粹主义的入门书还是不错的，和Galston、Zakaria的文章一起读效果更好。

个人感觉Mueller的这本书在内容上较Mudde的一书稍有欠缺，但在政治理论层面要高Mudde的不少。更为明显的是，Mueller显著地具有更为消极的立场。值得一提的是，Mueller去年来华讲座系列跟这本书的内容基本上重合，算是了结了去年听他的讲座想要写点东西的愿望(指读书报告)
