Populists will always claim that they and they alone represent the people and their true interests. Müller also shows that, contrary to conventional wisdom, populists can govern on the basis of their claim to exclusive moral representation of the people: if populists have enough power, they will end up creating an authoritarian state that excludes all those not considered part of the proper "people." 关于populism读的第一本书。因为本来这方面的知识是空白，读下来感觉还不错。篇幅比较小，论述也比较耐读(没有那种标准学术作品的枯燥感)，最后还总结了7个“命题”, 可以说对读者很友好了。

情绪，社会经济与政治主张都不能提供理解民粹主义的内在逻辑。多部论述美国民粹主义的书籍已经写明了民粹政治家们的政治主张与“民粹主义者”的经济利益是背离的。因此无法用政治主张来理解民粹主义的内在逻辑，如Hochschild则勾勒了美国民粹主义政治主张的背后语境来规避这一矛盾。本书作者则更抽象的使用了moralistic imagniation of politics，从政治哲学的内在路径来定义和理解民粹。情绪或社会经济(external shock)都可是民粹的肇因，但仅此而已。民粹主义的必要条件（而非定义）在作者看来是anti-pluralism和anti-elitism (or anti-establishment)，以及谁是人民...... 最后作者各种黑???

这本书一般，他所提出的民粹主义定义的两个核心内容：反精英主义和反多元主义，实际上只是延续了Cas Mudde的意识形态定义罢了。Mudde的定义无疑比他的更加全面，Mudde的定义分为肯定性定义（positive defition）和否定性定义（negative definition）两个方面。其中否定性定义就是反精英主义和反多元主义，而肯定性定义则强调人民与精英的对立以及人民的公意。如果真想找入门著作，大部头的推荐The Handbook of Populism，小篇幅的推荐Populism: A Very Short Introduction。大部头那本是经典导论，不可错过
