情绪，社会经济与政治主张都不能提供理解民粹主义的内在逻辑。多部论述美国民粹主义的书籍已经写明了民粹政治家们的政治主张与“民粹主义者”的经济利益是背离的。因此无法用政治主张来理解民粹主义的内在逻辑，如Hochschild则勾勒了美国民粹主义政治主张的背后语境来规避这一矛盾。本书作者则更抽象的使用了moralistic imagniation of politics，从政治哲学的内在路径来定义和理解民粹。情绪或社会经济(external shock)都可是民粹的肇因，但仅此而已。民粹主义的必要条件（而非定义）在作者看来是anti-pluralism和anti-elitism (or anti-establishment)，以及谁是人民...... 最后作者各种黑???

在一个到处讲“民粹主义”的时代，到底什么才是“民粹主义”？Muller这本书可以说及时——但不一定是全面地——回答了这一问题。在Muller看来，民粹主义实际上是一种关于何为“我们人民”的moral imagination, 当liberal democracy讲“我们是人民”/”我们也是人民“时, 民粹主义主张”只有我们才是人民“。因此，民粹主义的核心不在于antielitist, 而在于antipluralist，在于其对于别人也可以代表我们人民的排斥。这种思想史的解读当然有其说服力，不过私以为不引入social-economical的讨论，还是很难完全把握当代民粹主义兴起的本质。

关于populism读的第一本书。因为本来这方面的知识是空白，读下来感觉还不错。篇幅比较小，论述也比较耐读(没有那种标准学术作品的枯燥感)，最后还总结了7个“命题”, 可以说对读者很友好了。
