Among major foreign investors in Africa, China has stirred the most fear, hope, and controversy. For many, the specter of a Chinese neocolonial scramble is looming, while for others China is Africa’s best chance at economic renewal. Yet, global debates about China in Africa have been based more on rhetoric than on empirical evidence. Ching Kwan Lee’s The Specter of Global China is the first comparative ethnographic study that addresses the critical question: Is Chinese capital a different kind of capital?

Offering the clearest look yet at China’s state-driven investment in Africa, this book is rooted in six years of extensive fieldwork in copper mines and construction sites in Zambia, Africa’s copper giant. Lee shadowed Chinese, Indian, and South African managers in underground mines, interviewed Zambian miners and construction workers, and worked with Zambian officials. Distinguishing carefully between Chinese state capital and global private capital in terms of their business objectives, labor practices, managerial ethos, and political engagement with the Zambian state and society, she concludes that Chinese state investment presents unique potential and perils for African development. The Specter of Global China will be a must-read for anyone interested in the future of China, Africa, and capitalism worldwide.

1）中國國傢資本 vs. 全球私人資本，銅礦產業 vs. 建築行業，李靜君真的很喜歡挑這種有趣的二元模式，如第一本書的深圳 vs. 香港，第二本書的東北vs. 廣東（Rustbet vs. Sunbelt XD）；2）「中國特色資本主義/殖民主義」在非洲的發展，一方麵認為天下烏鴉一般黑，大傢都差不多，另一方麵我黨和RMB在很多情況下是非洲政府和人民的最優選擇；3）有瞭李靜君背書之後，知乎上的答案居然更加可愛瞭起來；4）最近的瞭Derek Sheridan的兩篇文章，裡麵提到由於頂著「新殖民主義」的枷鎖從而投鼠忌器，駐外使館要求在非中國人「安分守己不鬧事」，或許是一個有趣的補充；5）Marx, Weber, Polanyi，誒，三個人的理論我一直都搞不懂，羨慕這種運用自如的人。附錄很好看。。

預期太高瞭以為是像ring leader for a day那種有故事的結果還是玩弄瞭很多概念而且馬剋思左派的normative judgment太多工人條件不好就一定是被剝削瞭贊比亞工人偷盜也是一種“counter-movement" 翻白眼最喜歡的是第四章說的在贊比亞的中國工人集體吃苦主義要多一點這樣的故事少一點強加的總結就好瞭|notes in Evernote

李靜君敢入田野八年做一個如此挑戰性的課題勇氣可嘉，但正因她對非洲大陸缺乏社會經驗而使全書的理論深度和比較框架遠沒有過去中國勞工研究有深度。橫嚮比較中國國有資本與全球私有資本、銅礦與建造業，縱嚮比較資本的積纍、生産和思潮，每個版塊都以描述性的訪談和觀察為主，較為淺顯。最不滿意第五章泛泛談贊比亞的勞工運動，人相和矛盾都太模糊瞭（勞工反對跨國企業的剝削）。中心論點非常社會學-不能抽象地理解資本，必須去觀察資本發展的具體情境、背後的利益衝突以及調解後的産物。相較全球私有資本，中國國有資本必須平衡除瞭經濟利益最大化以外其他的國傢訴求（政治資本和自然資源渠道），所以更容易受到從上或至下的壓力而選擇妥協。想象經濟或政治學人來做這個課題，宏觀數據和建模可以看到更大的全景，李靜君還是太早太微觀太獨斷瞭 M
