Paul Bede Johnson (born on 2 November 1928 in Manchester, England) is a British Roman Catholic journalist, historian, speechwriter and author. He was educated at the Jesuit independent school Stonyhurst College, and at Magdalen College, Oxford. Johnson first came to prominence in the 1950s as a journalist writing for, and later editing, the New Statesman magazine. A prolific writer, he has written over 40 books and contributed to numerous magazines and newspapers. Whilst associated with the left in his early career, he is now a prominent conservative popular historian. His son is the prominent journalist Daniel Johnson, founder of Standpoint.
Applies a wide lens and an unconventional approach to illuminate the various phases of Churchill's career. From his adventures as a young cavalry officer in ther service of the Empire to his role as an elder statesman prophesying the advent of the Cold War, eminent historian Paul Johnson shows how Churchill's immense adaptability combined with his natural pugnacity to make him a formidable leader. Johnson's narration of Churchill's many triumphs and setbacks, rich with anecdote and quotation, illustrates the man's humour, resilience and courage as never before.

評分An entertaining and quick read.A lot of the remarks were based on the writer's personal opinion/admiration of Churchill. The part about domestic politics before WWI was a bit dull. The part of WWII was too short to do justice to Churchill's deeds. The highlights are the epilogue, where the author summarized the key lessons from Churchill's life.
