This childless couple promptly erase from the boy all knowledge of his identity and he grows up ignorant of his past. Later in life, after a career as an architectural historian, Austerlitz - having avoided all clues that might point to his origin - finds the past returning to haunt him and he is forced to explore what happened fifty years before.

這一年裏最喜歡的小說。被曆史塑造的人/在曆史中掙紮的自我/書寫私人曆史的嘗試/復述災難然而災難本身不可復述。建築，攝影，繪畫，意識流，檔案，不同層次的迴憶，etc.是漂亮的文學手段，讓人反思修辭和共情如何越過文化記憶和私人記憶的界限（車站，夜間動物園，礦坑）；曆史是什麼；what we've done？用真.建築錶現心理狀態很吸引人。記憶是一張地圖。曆史可能是一種缺乏共同體的廢墟-考古學。前麵都是鬍扯但是作者肯定是福柯說的想讓作品立刻成為文學的那種人。還看到瞭本雅明，維特根斯坦和康拉德。

讀完好纍。一層疊一層的隱喻、轉述和時空剪切。建築、老照片、一個人和一群人的曆史的虛實交織。James Wood’s intro said it all, but it should be read as an outro.
