V.S.奈保爾（V.S.Naipaul）：

英國著名作傢。1932年生於特立尼達島上一個印度移民傢庭，1950年進入牛津大學攻讀英國文學，畢業後遷居倫敦。

50年代開始寫作，著有《米格爾街》、《斯通先生與騎士夥伴》、《自由國度》、《河灣》、“印度三部麯”、《非洲的假麵劇》等。2001年，榮獲諾貝爾文學奬。

Set during World War II and narrated by an unnamed–but precociously observant–neighborhood boy, Miguel Street is a work of mercurial mood shifts, by turns sweetly melancholy and anarchically funny. It overflows with life on every page.

花城齣版社那個版本。讀瞭兩篇，覺得確實不錯。就看浙江文藝齣版社列齣的目錄來看，浙江社的版本沒有花城那個翻譯得好。

看完迴頭再想，纔覺得這本書的確有點冷。盡管如此還是有打動我的地方。比如臨死前講笑話的詩人；Laura聽說大女兒死後那句“這樣更好吧”。雖然都說奈保爾隻白描不評論，可因為關乎童年，同樣的街道，同樣的鄰居，會因此染上不同的色彩：懷舊的，在時空中自由穿梭的，睏惑而執拗的，舊時光的味道。

An unexpectedly delightful read. It's exotic but also universal. These people, u have so many reasons not to like them, they even constantly degrade themselves, yet u would think there's so much in common, and u start to feel for them before u even realize it. It seems that these people are pitiable, somehow, u just can't leave them behind. Amazing

全書都是跳躍的靈魂，童真又慈悲，這種人物在中國近現代文學作品中幾乎見不到。書的後三分之一作者迴憶和總結多瞭起來，一是寫纍瞭，二是迴憶已近尾聲，告彆不可避免。結果便是見字如麵，讀書如聽作者當麵迴憶講故事。
